Fatigue
“What?” he hears Crimthann ask.
One of the men wipes his face with a cloth and sips some water from a clay jug before replying, “The bear looked into the second storey window where the children slept. The one child who survived said she saw it rip apart the window sill and grab her two younger siblings, both boys, before she could hit it with a chamber pot. She screamed for her parents who slept in another room while the bear ran off on two legs with her brothers. She said the bear wore a huge sword. We’re planning on going bear hunting for revenge.”
He glances down at the soul sword hanging from his side. The one Endellion suggested he wrap in cloth. The one that made him attracted to young girls. He so desperately wanted to get rid of the accursed thing! He recalled Endellion taking him into the cave in the hidden village. The skeleton inside with its double rows of teeth was the size of a giant bear. “You think it could be a giant wearing a bear skin and head?”
The man rubs his chin. “Never thought of that. Damned giants.”
“Hold off on that thought or hunting down the bears for revenge,” he says. “Let me look into this. Are you making the frame stronger?”
“We were thinking of doing that.”
“And prepare for a possible war but wait until I come back to collect you,” he says. Maybe he can build up a force of his own. The men will think he means against Sir Ganbold. To fight who exactly he wasn’t sure of yet.
As they ride on Crimthann asks, “Why would a giant wear a bear skin and head and attack little children?”
“Could be a cursed sword,” he replies.
“That’s nonsense,” his uncle says. “Why take the little children?”
“To eat them,” he says. He keeps seeing the corpse of the giant in the cave and the giant’s open mouth and the double rows of teeth. There were rumors of giant bears who walked on two legs attacking homesteads and stealing children. Bones of children had been found at the entrance of caves that contained firepits. But that was fifty or more years ago. Afterwards, bears had been hunted almost to extinction.
