Fatigue
As the Sword Master tries to sleep like the others around a fire pit in a small opening in the forest, he hears the sound of horses and wagon wheels. Grumpy from all the thoughts turning in his head he staggers beside the road. There’s just enough moonlight for him to see Jedreck and Lara riding up ahead of the carnival wagon. He steps onto the road and raises his hands.
“Sword Master,” Jedreck says and nods towards him.
Lara only nods. In the darkness her face appears pale and drained as if she were carrying a great weight inside.
He sees Haashir with Ellis seated beside him at the front of the carnival wagon. It’s rare to see someone shorter than Ellis. Yet there’s a big presence about Haashir.
“We should talk,” he says indicating that they should pull into the small opening.
He takes the reigns of Lara’s horse, Aminah. As he does, he notices Jedrick reach for a weapon. Ignoring the giant, he leads Aminah away from the others. He stares up at Lara who refuses to look at him but keeps her chin up in a noble gesture.
“What did you do to my sword?” he asks without as much gruffness as he intended.
“You’ll need that sword to defeat Sir Olaf,” she replies defensively.
He steps closer to her. “Whose soul is in it?”
He watches silently as she stiffness up while gnawing on her lower lip. “A great leader of men,” she replies with disdain.
“And a little girl molester,” he adds his anger boiling up.
“Yes,” she replies. “A monster.”
The king was still alive when she gave him the sword. “What’s the real reason you made the sword?”
Her gaze drops to his with an expression full of spite. “I wanted him imprisoned for all time for what he did,” she replies.
“Yet it’s the wielder who suffers,” he says as he lets go of Aminah’s reigns. He walks away and retrieves the soul sword. When he gets back to her, she’s off Aminah’s back and Jedreck is beside her. He thrusts the sheathed sword into her hands.
As he turns away, he hears her say, “When it’s time, you can always call it back.”
