These Aren’t Traders
Sir Oisen halts Ronin and Endellion follows suit on her own horse. It’s been years but he knows the land of the Sif is near.
“You need to wear a head scarf and your cowl,” he says looking everywhere at once for signs of his people. “They’ll notice your eyes are farther apart then theirs and know you’re a Fif.”
“It’s too hot,” Endellion complains.
“Then you must stay back,” he replies and quickly regrets the gruffness in his voice.
“If they ask why I’m sweating tell them I have the summer sickness,” she grumbles and pulls her cowl over her head.
“That works,” he replies and gently knees Ronin to continue.
The sun isn’t fully overhead when they trot down a well-worn path. A short time later he notices movement behind a yew tree.
“Halt!” an official sounding voice calls out from a yew tree. Male Sifs with nocked arrows step out from either side of the path.
“I am called Sir Oisen, an infiltrator studying the Propers. He pulls back his hair so the two Sifs can see his desiccated ears. “My father is Roberts of the Bulrush clan.” The two young Sifs glance at each other with confused expression.
“Who is the girl?” the authoritative voice demands.
Sir Oisen glances at Endellion. “My wife, but she has a fever.” The look on the faces of the two Sifs causes him to continue hurriedly, “But no sores. Just a common summer fever.”
“I’ll confirm who you are,” the authoritative voice says from behind the yew tree. To the two Sifs he commands, “Keep them here.”
