A Fleet Of Ships
It’s a day later and the preparations are ready to capture the soul of Wymund’s father. Lara shivers. Every time she captures a soul now, she remembers the Baron Rupert and what he did to his sister and so many other girls. The gasping breaths of the ancient dwarf are coming less and less. One moment he’s sucking in a breath the next there’s no inhalation or exhalation. She rolls the small leather bag with the quartz covered in a drop of the noble dwarf’s blood. His mouth stays open as he inhales and exhales with rapid and shallow breaths. She glances off into the distance. It’s early morning and the dew still covers everything. On the rocky beach by the river the Master Swordsman practices sword strikes and deflections. “Jedreck,” she says in a commanding voice.
The giant puts down the bell he is holding and hurries to her.
She motions him to lean his head close to hers. “Discreetly cut yourself,” she whispers in a commanding voice.
His expression shows he’s not sure of her words.
“Cut yourself and let a drop into the bag,” she whispers. Out loud she says, “I need you to slit the mouth of the bag a bit or it won’t cover his mouth.”
She watches as Jedreck takes out a normal sized knife for him but a dagger for her and nicks his finger before he pretends to slit the mouth of the bag slightly. Once she sees a drop of his blood enter the bag she says, “Thank you. It’s almost time, please get back to the bells.”
Her intention is solely on the Wymund’s father’s face now. The grey skin of death along with the dulling eyes tells her to keep the mouth of the bag close to his mouth. She sees him suck in a deep breath and places the mouth of the bag over his mouth. There’s a long exhale and then the dwarf noble’s chest raises no more.
When she and Gwen were going over the necromancy book, Gwen pointed out that the blood of a person still living could control a device more than the deceased. A device meant a weapon or a piece of jewellery. Since she hadn’t tried this before she didn’t know if it would work. She did wonder, as the soul collector, if, like the giant’s sword, she could call the war hammer as well.
