A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates! BOOK Three (Part Fourteen: Blog Seventy-Eight)
By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series
Sadie points to her bucket and “Ship Protector’s”. The Cannibal gives her a weak smile and piles the buckets one on top of the other before lifting them off the ground.
Sadie stealthily moves towards an area with numerous boulders. As she is about to take another step she freezes. In the twilight, she sees a human footprint of such girth it seems impossible. Gazing ahead she sees another. These must be made by the giants of the island. But they’re not fresh. The imprints are made of stone. She glances all around before moving forward. They need cover but they also want to be on high ground. She nods her head sideways so “Ship Protector” knows to move ahead. Once Umi climbs past her and stands with her bow ready, Sadie sheaths her throwing knife and helps the Cannibal with the buckets. As they near the top, she waits for “Ship Protector” to gaze over the ridge.
The top of the hill is covered in trees and some outcroppings of granite. She signals for the other two to gather behind a mini granite cliff. “Tonight, we stay here,” she dares to whisper.
She sees the Cannibal take out the silver straw and a long snuff box with thin metal needles inside. Next the Cannibal pulls out a leather bag and loosens the thongs. The smell of tobacco and jasmine fills the air. The Cannibal breaks off a small chunk a moist looking cake and drops it into her mouth. As The Cannibal chews, a vapor, barely visible in the dim light, flows all round. The Cannibal licks one of the needles with her tongue.
Sadie sits back as the mixed scent of tobacco and jasmine fills her nostrils. She starts wondering about her past. Who were the men in the boat with her when the Nagua found her ten years ago? She stubbornly shakes her head. Just above, she sees the two moons crossing. “Crazy Bumbee’s balls,” she curses and falls asleep.
