The Ama “Ship Protector” Umi sits on the foredeck beside The Navigator “Storm Caller” Master Jo Anne.  “It is the dreaded island, Dread Island?” Umi asks in her Japanese accent. “It is,” “Storm Caller” replies in her soft, Cockney accent, while peering through a telescope.  “Do you have a plan?” Umi asks, scanning the sea for enemies. “The monster Captain Barthadrow,” “Storm Caller” and Umi spit at the same time, “Will have the ports well guarded.  Now that the Nagua has shared half the crew with the Freya, we can’t afford to send many on a skiff.” “How many can we send?” asks Umi. “Two,” “Storm Caller” replies.  “Ship Builder would be a good choice, but the Admiral knows he will act too hastily.” “Because of Witch?” “Yes,” “Storm Caller” replies, and Umi hears the lament in her voice. “You think she’s there…and still alive?” Umi asks, hoping it’s not too insensitive of a question. “Yes, she has Ship Builder’s love to protect her.” “The finger?” Umi asks. “The finger, I was there when it happened.  It is a powerful talisman.” “Which two?” Umi asks, hurriedly.  She wants to forget the story about the Ship Builder’s finger. “You and “Dizzying Blade”,” “Storm Caller” replies. Umi gulps.  “Makes sense,” she says with little enthusiasm.
