A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates!  BOOK TWO  (Part Twelve: Blog Sixty-Seven)

By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series

The rain doesn’t last and the sun shines through wisps of clouds.  Olanis rocks back and forth as Admiral Alejandra tells all the girls that Zala is now her First Mate.  Zala in turn calls for all the girls to line up.

“You have first choice, Captain Olanis,” Admiral Alejandra says with her feet apart and hands clasped behind her back.

“After being asked, stand forward, only if you are willing, lasses,” Zala says.

Olanis gazes along the line of female pirates.  The two components she desperately needs are surgeons and cooks.  She stops before a tall girl with auburn hair that blows freely across a brown, lean face with freckles.  Her large, sharp green eyes are dazzling.  “Daktari,” she says.  She has seen Daktari often assisting Canneta and Areso.

Daktari steps forward and so does the girl beside her.    Raphaela is also tall.  Her determined blue eyes stare straight ahead as her own blonde hair whips about.  Her long, pale face is emotionless.

Olanis purses her lips and smiles.  She had wondered if Daktari and Raphaela were together the same way Canneta and Areso are.  “Raphaela,” she says with a nod.

She stops before Mesi and Arsema, who are standing beside each other.  It amuses her that two sworn enemies could function so well together.  Both girls often helped “Unibrow” and Janice in the Galley.  Surprising they excelled at cooking.  “Mesi,” she calls first.  Mesi steps forward.  This should be interesting she thinks as she says, “Arsema.”  Arsema steps forward.

“Pourquoi?” she hears Amelie complain behind her causing her to chuckle as she moves down the line.

“She picked me first,” she hears Mesi whisper.

“Because you’re needy,” she hears Arsema reply.

At the end of the line, she turns to Admiral Alejandra.  “Only one more Admiral,” she shouts out with mirth in her voice.

Admiral Alejandra nods her head with a smile and says, “Master-at-arms Amelie, please strip down.”

“Aye, aye Capt…Admiral,” Amelie replies.  Olanis hears her shoot off numerous curse words as she strips.  “Zut Dixopus,” she says as she’s lowered near the stern of the Nagua.

“Make sure your Dixopus doesn’t hurt my new ship,” Olanis shouts down at Amelie as her Master-at-arms sinks under the waves.
