A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates!  BOOK TWO  (Part Twelve: Blog Sixty-Five)

By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series

Captain Olanis waits silently by the Mizzen mast.  She glances back at the Helms Wheel where “Wheel Turner” stands beside Aarini, quietly giving the new Helmswoman of the Nagua instructions on when to ring the bell.

“Ship Builder” is on her ship, Freya, checking it for leaks and making any other necessary repairs.  She’s glad for him.  For Alejandra the other girls are like sisters.  But for “Ship Builder” they are his daughters and she knows the saying, a parent should never have to outlive their children.

The wind is getting stronger and her hair blows in strands where her new-used tricorn captain hat rests loosely on her head.  When and if they get “Flag Weaver” Thelma back, she’ll ask her to make a proper fitting tricorn hat.  Currently she’s wearing the hat of the former captain of the enemy ship, now the Freya, over a durag full of stuffing.

Through her brimming tears she gazes down at the five bodies wrapped and tied in old sail.  However, she’s less a weeper and more an avenger.  She gently caresses her mandolin as Admiral Alejandra recites the burial rights of the Sisterhood of Pirates.

Farewell ye, sisters of the sea

Ye fought well, and ye fought true!

Now the life is out of yer eyes

But your memories live on…

Along with all the other girls, Olanis makes a fist and beats it against her chest.

Farewell ye, sisters of the sea

If your life was short or long

You lived it fully!

Wherever death takes you

Live like you did with us

Full of vengeance for the wrong doers

And full of honour and glory for your sisters!

Olanis thunks her chest with her fist again and shouts with the others, “And full of honour and glory for your sisters!”
