A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates!  BOOK TWO  (Part Twelve: Blog Sixty)

By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series

First Mate “One Eye” Olanis hears the faint ringing of a bell.  As her head clears from whatever “Unibrow” and Janice mixed into their rum, the dinging of the bell sounds more desperate.

She’s squints at her surroundings.  She’s in the Hold of the ship and not in her room.  Down the rows of hammocks she sees Amelie sit up.  “Get ye up lasses!” she shouts out groggily.  “The Captain and the rest need our assistance.  Now!”

“À présent! Il est temps de tuer ou de mourir avec la joie d’essayer ! ” she hears Amelie shout out.  “Ah,” Amelie says slapping her own forehead.  “English Amelie, they do not understand the most beautiful language of all.  Kill or die with joy,” she translates, much to Olanis’s amusement.

Up on deck she hears “Storm Caller” hollering from the helm’s wheel, “Get your Anne Bonnies across them ladders!  We’ll not be Princess Selas this day!”  Olanis notices a clay jug of rum tied around “Storm Caller’s” waste.

“Have to, lasses,” Olanis shouts out with mirth as she draws out two daggers.  She notices Amelie is already crossing a ladder.  A worrying sight catches her attention.  Mesi and Althea are at the section of gunwale closest to Amelie’s ladder with knocked arrows.

“When should we shoot?” Mesi asks.

“Remember what I taught you,” she hears Amelie call back.  “If you want to hit something aim at whatever’s beside it.

“Because of our superior eyesight, especially mine?” Althea asks.

“Oui–yes,” Amelie replies.  “Don’t shoot that stupid dixopus if it shows up.”

“Sister,” Olanis hears Arsema call to Amelie from the enemy’s ship.  “Come and let’s dance as a duet.”

Olanis grins as she scampers across her own ladder.
