A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates!  BOOK TWO  (Part Eleven: Blog Fifty-Seven)

By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series

Model:  Joanne Gosling: Joannegosling22@gmail.com ;  Medieval Rapier:  fireandsteel.ca; Background:  Daiana Duca

Three of the enemy’s cannon windows open.  Cannons don’t pop out of the windows.  Instead she sees miniature ballistas.  The “Ship Builder” dips his arrow in the flaming bowl the “Ship Protector” is holding, and shoots it through one of the open windows.  In the blink of an eye he’s dipped another arrow into the fiery bowl.     “Unibrow’s” arrow strikes true.  She hears men cursing from out of one of the windows.  There’s a shout from the deck of the enemy ship.  She sees enemy sailors stand all along the starboard gunwale of their ship with bows and crossbows.

She knocks her bow and waits.  The only range weapons she hears are the twang from the two ships.  “Ship Builder” and “Unibrow’s” on the Nagua, and a few of the enemy sailors with their own long bows.  It irks her but she knows that the male enemy has the physical advantage for range.  Originally she thought the same for melee attacks but “Dizzying Blade” taught her differently.

‘It’s a dance’ “Dizzying Blade” had explained to her wearing a deadly smirk.  ‘Stab or slash at the soft points.  Retreat.  Duck, twirl, avoid attack.  Stab or slash at the soft points.  Dance to the movement of the enemy’s attack.  It’s a dance of giving and taking.  Use the power of attack to spin and counter-attack.  Eyes, arteries, wrists, and privates are wonderful places to jab.  Don’t hit the back, hit the spine.

She snarls and shoots at an enemy sailor wearing a blue skullcap, a frayed blue hip-length jacket, and matching pants in the groin.
