A Motley Sisterhood of Pirates!  (Part Nine: Blog Fifty-Two)

By Dan Watt and Taylor Norris, co-authors of the Rita Walker series

“Are they sleeping,” the Captain asks Helmswoman “Wheel Turner” Synthia as she gently turns the helm’s wheel.

“Aye, Captain,” Helmswoman “Wheel Turner” Synthia replies with serious wrinkles at the corner of her eyes.  “The rum mixed with laudanum did the trick but we don’t have much left.”

“It’s otherworldly I suppose,” the Captain says with a sigh.  Synthia sees her stare up into the sky.  “”One Eye” will make an excellent captain.”

“She will,” Synthia replies as she blinks away tears.

“I know she’s your best friend,” the Captain says patting her arm as it gently turns the spoked wheel.  “But you’re the strongest of us, and we desperately need another ship.”  She watches as the Captain grounds her teeth.  “Janice and “Unibrow” figure there were sixteen in the first pinnace and “One Eye” estimates about the same on the other.”

“So how many are left on the ship we’re taking, is the question,” Synthia’s says thoughtfully.

“Aye, and that might mean crew members full of laudanum will have to help us take it.”

“That would be interesting, and dangerous,” she says thoughtfully.

“The Nagua is as much your ship as it is mine and “Storm Callers”,” the Captain says and Synthia realizes it’s not a question but a statement—and a true one.  “”One Eye” Olanis is captain material Synthia.  And there can only be one captain on a ship.  We need to take that galleon.”

“I realize its best,” she says trying to hold back a sob, realizing she would rarely see much of First Mate “One Eye” Olanis soon.  “We need to get to the Pregnancy Ship and help the Queen of Pirates,” she adds to change the subject.

“She’s more than that,” the Captain says with a fond smile in the dim twilight, “she’s Mother of Pirates.”

“I think that holds more meaning,” Sadie says with a grin.  “A mother is for all her children.”
